International Circulation: What kind of roles do you see professional organizations such as the ACC playing in the prevention of cardiovascular disease?
Dr Zoghbi: I think professional organizations are important in the overall health drive. The reason for it is that behind them there are many individuals (41000 members in the ACC in the United States and 6000 abroad, for example). If you send the message that this important, then we can do a good job of treating people who have cardiovascular disease but the message also gets through to just come in for a checkup or in our daily lives to exercise. These things are important. Secondly, professional organizations create guidelines outlining what is important to be emphasized. If you look at the ten goals set out for us to be able to reach the ‘25 by 25’ goal, they are put together by the World Health Organization, the World Heart Federation, the American College of Cardiology, the American Heart Association and the European Society of Cardiology, all brought together to speak with one voice. I think this is crucial if we can energize the base, the healthcare professionals, to go out into the community and spread this message of community health and individual health.
